Mercedes Lovie, Ed.D. is the Associate Superintendent of Oceanside Unified School District, serving over 16,500 students. Dr. Lovie started her educational career as a teacher in a culturally and linguistically diverse school district in California. As an educator, she has served as a curriculum specialist, central office administrator, professional coach, county office leader, and for 11 years as a principal at both the elementary and secondary levels. She serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California (USC) in the educational leadership program. Dr. Lovie has focused on equity and inclusive instructional practices throughout her career. This led to designing an inclusive American History curriculum and professional development for educators funded by $2M in Federal competitive grants. Dr. Lovie is currently leading the efforts in her district to establish the Community Schools Program, building an inclusive approach to Special Education programing, and a strategic visioning process to build a roadmap to the future for her district. Dr. Lovie earned her doctorate at USC with a research focus on improving organizational outcomes through data driven actions, implementation of effective organizational systems, and equitable practices. Her dissertation was about the barriers of people identifying as women teachers aspiring to principalship. She continues to examine ways to reduce the inequity in hiring across the organization through supporting candidates, systemic changes, and building sponsorship for women.
