Most systems address school absences in a formal, threatening manner. Basically, students receive punitive letters describing the potential consequences of absences that are often written in a legalistic manner and at a grade level far above the average reader. Instead of punishing families and children for absences, we approached this challenge from a different perspective. Similar to other assets-based, harm-reduction strategies, we used relationship-building and assets-based letters to “nudge” parents and students to change their behavior in an effort to reduce chronic absenteeism in schools. This session will describe our efforts along with the outcomes.
