These sessions focus on the political dynamics which have major affect on the degree of success experienced during the start up of equity initiatives or during their implementation when the benchmarks for success experienced are not what is being attempted. The first session addresses THE LAY OF THE LAND when engaged in equity efforts. The second session addresses THE FOUNDATION NEEDED.

PART ONE will include definitions of key terms which have major bearing on what is being undertaken in equity efforts, followed by all participants self-selecting into small groups of 2-4 persons to briefly react to some factors which they may experience as the CONTEXT of whatever they are attempting to accomplish. This is followed by how a brief definition of CULTURALLY COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP [CCL] applies to their situation. Each participant will then respond to a few items in two diagnostic questionnaires by the presenter about the degree to which equity efforts they are attempting or observing require a greater degree of cultural courageousness. Part one concludes with participants identifying how they can use what was learned and questions they have for next steps back home.

PART TWO will include attention to the foundation either already laid by participants engaged in equity initiatives, or the foundation they might want to consider developing during such initiatives. The characteristics and needs of seven stakeholder groups will be addressed within the context of both cultural and structural barriers they identify as presently being experienced. A major component of CCL is COLLABORATION BY ALL STAKEHOLDERS, and two major characteristics of culturally courageous leaders are being COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS AND CONSCIENTIOUS COACHES. The politics of playing such roles will be briefly addressed at the end of the session when participants are asked to identify what their next steps might be back home in the near future.
